Is every lump in the thyroid is cancer? No, every lump in the thyroid is not cancer. The Most Important thing is that you should do a proper diagnosis and treatment because if we keep that cyst as it is for a long time for 5 years and 10 years even if it’s non-cancerous, there are chances that the cyst turns into cancer. When you feel a lump in the front side of your neck, you should first consult a doctor and do sonography. There are some important indicators in sonography like how big is the lump? is there any calcification? What is the size? How is the vascularity? Lymph nodes are visible or not? For this swelling generally, doctors suggest FNAC. What is FNAC? Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology – It is highly cost-effective and accurate as a first-line investigative technique. In this technique, pathologists check if there are any cancerous cells present or not. If the lump is non-cancerous then should we treat it? Yes, we should treat it. Because over a period of time it can get converted into a cancerous lump. Less than 1% of non-cancerous lumps after removal of thyroid when given for test had cancer cells in the thyroid. Recovery time after surgery is 4 to 6 weeks of surgery. The only treatment for thyroid cancer is surgery and then radioactive iodine therapy. And then the patient is shifted to a thyroid supplement. Thyroid Cancer is totally curable. The most important thing is to detect early and treat early.
